Perseverance deemed extraordinary
But the little Singaporean had not yet said her last word! After 13 months of intensive care and carefully controlled growth, her parents have finally taken her home for the first time. Although the little one will still require artificial respiration at home because of her chronic lung disease, she now weighs 6.3 kg.
A hospital statement said the little girl had shown “extraordinary resilience” that the nurses had not expected: “Despite health complications at birth, she has inspired others with her perseverance and growth, making her an extraordinary “Covid-19 baby”, a shining ray amid the turmoil.”

Emergency delivery because of preeclampsia
If the delivery had been induced at only 4 months of pregnancy, it is because of a diagnosis of pre-eclampsia in the mother. This pregnancy-related condition is caused by a malfunctioning placenta, resulting in extremely dangerous high blood pressure. If intracranial hypertension develops in the pregnant woman, it can lead to brain hemorrhage and death of the mother-to-be.
After just 25 weeks of pregnancy, Kwek Yu Xuan weighs the same as an apple. The previous record for the world’s smallest baby was also held by an American girl, who weighed 245 grams at birth in 2018.
